Terror added: 10/16/07
Terror - "Rhythm Amongst the Chaos" - Reaper Records
The mighty Terror from Los Angeles are back with four new original songs and a cover of Breakdown's "Kickback." The EP kicks off with the title track and gives us a heavy dose of Terror's fury that we've heard on past albums. The opening song is about the sanctuary that is, for the band and so many others, "the road." The next track to pound our ear drums is "Disconnected," my favorite of the CD and one about feeling alone in a crowd and being a true outsider. The third song is the 93 second "Vengeance Calls On You," a song with as hard an edge as any other from the band. The final original song of the EP is "Arms of the Truth" and then closing out the album is the cover of "Kickback" featuring guest vocals from Vinnie Paz of Jedi Mind Tricks. Overall this is a strong delivery of the classic style hardcore Terror is known and loved for. If you loved them before you'll love them just as much when you hear "Rhythm Amongst the Chaos;" Another classic from Terror!

Turn It Around - Demo 2007
Some of the lyrics in this band's song "Marshall's on Second," track two of this five song demo, sum the band up for me; "This is passion. This is heart." Even if a band sucks if they've got heart and passion they're going to reach some people if they can really show that in their performance. Luckily Sacramento's Turn It Around does not suck and their passion and heart for hardcore music shows in these songs. You can grab four of these songs on their MYSPACE page and I suggest you do so. For fans of Chain of Strength, Trial, etc.

Plead the Fifth - Demo 2007
Negative Approach influenced hardcore with a slightly updated sound born out of Sacramento. A newer band worth looking out for that shows lots of signs of greatness. Hopefully they'll land a label soon, which by the sounds of this demo shouldn't be much of a problem, so we can get a better recording. This recording is decent but there's definitely some room for improvement. If you're into old Boston Hardcore bands with mob vocals and lots of circle pit action check out Plead The Fifth. myspace.com/pleadthefifth

Skare Tactic added: 4/24/07
Skare Tactic - "The Rage Within" - Our Blood Records
SoCal ragers Skare Tactic are back with a new album and the fury is as strong as ever. Ten killer tracks of Los Angeles hardcore done just the way hardcore should be. True, they're not the most original bunch of musicians from this state but the viciousness of their delivery more than makes up for it. Words like "intense" and "brutal" get attached to many undeserving bands but the words fit well with Skare Tactic. "The Rage Within" is one of the better hardcore albums I've heard in a while. Get it!

Pressvre added: 4/10/07
Pressvre - "Beasts" - High Fidelity Records
Pressvre is from Los Angeles. I don't like Los Angeles. I like Pressvre. You should too. They play hardcore with some crusty rock n' roll influences. At times they remind me of the gone but not forgotten All Bets Off. They're definitely trying and succeeding at not sounding exactly like everyone else. They draw comparisons to Doomriders and Cursed and they wouldn't be too far off but Pressvre certainly holds their own. You'd be a fool not to check these guys out. Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/pressurerocknroll.

No Truce added: 4/10/07
No Truce - "My Life. My Struggle." - High Fidelity Records
I reviewed No Truce's demo back in December 2005 and gave it overall thumbs up but said the band had room for improvement. It's 2007 now and the band has released a six song EP and indeed the band has improved. Recorded by Aaron at Castle Ultimate Studios this is classic style New York Hardcore with a few slight modern twists to make a rock solid listen. Lyrically it's still a little bland but I'm willing to overlook it as everything else is nearly perfect. Salinas has produced a lot of bands from that area but I think No Truce stands out on top of the rest. Overall this isn't a ground breaking EP but done extremely well for what it is and I definitely recommend it. High Fidelity Records scores big with this one.

Gather added: 3/4/07
Gather - "Beyond the Ruins" - Catalyst Records
Gather is the perfect example of hardcore band for the 21st century and I am quickly becoming a very big fan of this Bay Area group. Gather has a great sound and play with maximum intensity and passion which clearly comes through in the music and vocals. I got to first hear them on their split with Seven Generations and this album, "Beyond the Ruins," is their first full length. Eleven songs of politically and socially charged fury; just what hardcore should be. They draw comparisons to Earth Crisis but I would say it is mostly because the two bands share such similar ideologies. Fronted by vocalist Eva, musically Gather certainly stands on their own, playing heavy metallic hardcore, but their sound is in fact not too far from what Earth Crisis had going on. All in all a great album here. Songs seem to blend together too much at times and they lack diversity from track to track but over all this is a great album and great band. For anyone who gives to shits about what's going on in this world check out Gather. And if you don't care check them out anyway because they're just damn good.

Deathstar added: 2/5/07
xDeathstarx - "We Are The Threat" - Facedown Records
SoCal's 7-piece hardcore band, xDeathstarx, pick right back up where their last album, "The Triumph," left off. Heavy and intense this is definitely a brutal record. I still don't think the band benefits from having an additional two singers over most other bands but it certainly doesn't hurt them. With their signing to Facedown Records it seems lyrically the band has added religious themes to their songs. Not necessarilly a good or bad thing in my book but worth a mention in review. Vocally they have also added some clean vocals in a few songs but all in small doses; nothing that's going to make anyone scream "sellout." I can't imagine anyone who was really into their last album not being into this as it's basically a continuation and expansion of everything that was on "The Triumph." I'm sure with the bigger label the band will pick up a slew of new fans as well. For those who haven't heard them think of bands like Bleeding Through, Throwdown, Scars of Tomorrow, All Shall Perish, etc... and you'll get the idea. Production is great and everything sounds good. Although this style of hardcore/metalcore is definitely the "in" thing in the underground music scene at the moment I think xDeathstarx pulls enough of their own weight and stands out just enough to seperate themselves from the horde of all bands playing this style. If you're not familiar with them check out the myspace page at: www.myspace.com/xDEATHSTARx. Best songs: "Because The Flesh Is Weak", "Where's Your Faith Now?" and "We Are The Threat". 5V4G added: 2/5/07
Five Victims Four Graves - "Desperation Never Felt So Good" - New Age Records
After a few listens this EP won't let you go. At very first listen Sacramento's Five Victims Four Graves might sound like another American Nightmare/Give Up The Ghost clone but upon closer inspection this is a band really holding their own with a lot to offer. There's a lot of classic hardcore elements but they mix everything up very well and throw in some original twists here and there creating a fresh sound that will keep you listening and wanting more. I love the lyrics in the song "Calling Back This S.O.S." The opening track, "Keep Moving On," is a great gem as well and the perfect opener for the EP. Too bad it's not a full length. Highly recommended as it's one of the best releases New Age Records has put out in a while. Review by: Nick Martinson

Fight Everyone added: 2/5/07
Fight Everyone - "Up Against The World" - New Age Records
Fight Everyone, from Los Angeles, are another band with not one but three vocalists. Add a guy who's sole job it is to take care of samples and you've got an 8-piece hardcore band. Unlike xDeathstarx, who also have three singers, the three guys in Fight Everyone have significantly different voices but all manage to work well with each other. Musically, they're fairly run of the mill heavy New York hardcore with elements of metal. Think Merauder with a fuzzier guitar sound mixed with First Blood. Lyrically almost all of the songs are about straight edge or betrayal. All the songs have audio samples from movies in them (From Dusk Till Dawn, Falling Down, Meet The Parents are a few of them) which I don't think adds to their sound in any positive way as I usually equate audio samples with amateurism most of the time. Over all this isn't a bad release but it's nothing that's blowing me away. If you're thirsty for some straight-edge anthems to get you going however, this is a good place to go. Check out their myspace page at myspace.com/fighteveryone for a listen. Review by: Nick Martinson

By My Will added: 11/7/06
By My Will - "Widowmaker: The Mixtape 2006" - self released
One of my favorite NorCal bands returns after a frustrating search for a label turned up no reasonable offers. The band decided to put out the collection of songs they had recorded at the mighty Castle Ultimate Studios in Oakland themselves and screw the labels. All I have to say is it's a damn shame no labels would pick this up because it's one of the best recordings I've heard in a while. Mix Madball and Biohazard style hardcore executed with masterful precision and great production and you've got one killer batch of songs. Finish it off with a cover of "A Solution" by Redemption 87 and you've got my vote for one of the best hardcore albums of the year. This one won't be leaving my CD player any time soon.

Defiant Voice added: 11/7/06
Defiant Voice - "I'd Rather Sleep In The Dirt" - Lorelei Records
"I'd Rather Sleep In The Dirt" is this Sacramento band's second release; the first being the "Constitutional" EP which I revied earlier in the year. The band has made a lot of improvement since the last release and the reasons may or may not be the result of a couple of lineup changes. The band blasts through eight songs here which includes two re-recorded songs from their EP. The very heavy "Cut The Tumor, Save The Man" is one of my favorite tracks with it's slower paced grove. The Snapcase comparisons I made on the EP are more or less gone now as the band has crafted a more unique sound. I can still hear the Snapcase influence now and then but over all they've come into their own. A big improvement from their debut and overall a worthy album in any hardcore fan's collection.

Dead Reckoning added: 10/30/06
Dead Reckoning - "The Crime of Disbelief" - Demo
Dead Reckoning come from the far away Northern land known as Redding, CA. Really good demo from this semi-new band featuring ex-members of To The End. Think Strife meets Carry On. There's nine songs on here but the longest one is 1 minute and 35 seconds in length so this EP goes by a little too quickly. Can't wait for more songs. Definitely check these guys out. Gotta love the cover art from Curt It Straight too.

Looking Up added: 10/30/06
Looking Up - "Looking Up" - Panic Records
Finally, here's a band that proves you can be a hardcore band and still have some originality in your sound. Thank you Looking Up! These guys come out of the Los Angeles area and this is their debut full length. The band showcases a range of influences from rock to metal all the while maintaining a furious hardcore sound. Great production tops off the album. I highly recommend checking these guys out. Go to their myspace page for starters.

Start Again added: 10/30/06
Start Again - "There's Always Hope EP" - Demo
Young North Bayers Start Again show promise of a solid band with their debut self-released EP "There's Always Hope." They play hardcore that's a little more on the melodic side of things than on the metal side. Not too bad for a debut and I'll be looking to hear more from these guys. In the meantime check out their myspace page at http://www.myspace.com/startagain1.

Murder Practice added: 08/01/06
Murder Practice - "Murder Practice" - Westcoast Worldwide Records
I've had this CD from Murder Practice in my possession for over a month now and listening to it again after losing it in a pile of CDs waiting to be reviewed I realize I've made a massive mistake by not listening to it a hell of lot more because this thing rips it up big time. Monotony is the killer of many hardcore bands (well many bands period for that matter) but with two vocalists and an obvious diverse range of influences, Murder Practice stays far away from monotony and boredom all the while musically remaining 100% a hardcore band. Lots of gang vocals which I always love and think is a crucial element in a hardcore band. Intense music that goes from metal to melodic at all the right times. Vocalists Jacob Wallace and Joe Hale's voices compliment each other perfectly; one with a mid-range tone and the other holding down the lower/gutteral range. The recording comes out of Castle Ultimate Studios with Zack Ohren at the knobs so you know this sounds awesome. Get into these guys now if you haven't already. Review by: Nick Martinson

Seize The Night added: 08/01/06
Seize The Night - "Nothing Can Save Wretches Like Us"
San Francisco melodic hardcore band that mixes up a bit of rock into their sound. Not bad stuff here but not ground breaking either. Six songs on this E.P. I'd say these guys were worth keeping an eye on. There's talent here and I think in time these guys will get better. Not that they're bad now but I think they just missed hitting the bullseye on this one. Good production on the backend of things. Check out their myspace page at: http://www.myspace.com/seizethenightrocknroll. Review by: Nick Martinson

Postcards of the Hanging added: 07/24/06
Postcards of the Hanging - "Postcards of the Hanging" - Record Labelation
San Leandro is home of Postcards of the Hanging, a town not exactly known for hardcore and punk bands. These guys definitely have a big American Nightmare/Give Up The Ghost influence and sound like them mixed with a more melodic version of "My War" era Black Flag. Pretty good stuff, especially for a debut. Good recording quality and a good delivery from the band. Award for "Best Song Title of the Year" goes to them for the second track of the album, "You Are My Density". I hope everyone here gets the reference. If not, you need to watch more movies. Go check out the band's myspace page at myspace.com/postcardsofthehanging. Review by: Nick Martinson

Countime added: 06/07/06
Countime - "Broken. Blinded. Betrayed." - No Joke Records
Here is the debut CD from Los Angeles' own Countime. It's seven songs of tough rage fueled hardcore that's as hard as the concrete streets that band comes from. Decent recording quality and solid musicianship fronted by mid-ranged vocals. It's not the most impressive debut release but it has some stand out tracks and the band surely rips off heads live. This is definitely worth checking out. For fans of North Side Kings, Full Blown Chaos, and Hatebreed. Go to the bands page for a link to their myspace page. Review by: Nick Martinson

Turn It Around added: 06/07/06
Turn It Around - "These Days" EP - inSpite Records
Four songs of passionate kick ass Sacramento hardcore. Turn It Around play a good mix of classic style hardcore mixing elements of old and new school. Think Trial Meets Terror. I'll be listening to this one a lot. Why is it all NorCal bands rule? I swear I'm not biased... Pick it up!

Love Hope and Fear added: 06/07/06
Love Hope and Fear - "Gale"
The Bay Area's Love Hope and Fear are a band that have a wide range of influences and that showcases them nicely in their most recent release, "Gale." I think at their core they are a hardcore band but it would probably take most a few listens to realize it. Their music ranges from Fugazi-esque indie rock to the heavier sounds of bands like American Nightmare/Give Up The Ghost or Poison The Well to AFI inspired melodies. Ten tracks on here and never a dull moment. This band has something for everyone in the scene. Highly recommended. myspace.com/lovehopeandfear Review by: Nick Martinson

Seven Generations added: 04/17/06
Seven Generations / Gather - "split" 7inch - New Eden Records
Here's a powerful collection of political, vegan, and socially aware songs delivered from two solid metallic hardcore bands. First off is Orange County's Seven Generations with "Atonement" and "Rising of the Sun". Gather comes out of the Bay Area with "New Forms" and "Who Belongs?". All four songs on here are well delivered and passionate. Musically it's nothing new but it's definitely respectable and something I would listen to more than once. Plenty of breakdowns and sing a longs. I love the explanations along with the lyrics of each of the songs by both bands. If you haven't checked out either band yet this would be a good place to start. Go to the bands page here for links to their myspace pages. Review by: Nick Martinson

Charlie Hustle added: 04/08/06
Charlie Hustle - "Triple Play" demo
Charlie Hustle is a relatively new band from the Bay Area and "Triple Play" is their first release; a four song demo. The band is a hardcore band through and through but they combine elements of melody and metal to help seperate themselves from the rest. Track two, "Empty" showcases their more metal side with Iron Maiden style riffage while a song like track four, "Freedom", shows off their more melodic side. Overall a pretty good recording debut. By staying in the hardcore style yet showing plenty of range within it, the band shows a lot of promise here. This batch of songs is certainly not the most impressive debut of all time but for a new band it's a great start. Production comes from one of my favorite studios, Castle Ultimate, and the man behind the board on this recording is Zach Ohren. I haven't yet heard a bad recording come out of there. Definitely check out the band's myspace page where you can listen to the whole thing. Review by: Nick Martinson

Changing Face added: 03/22/06
Changing Face - "Our Last Chance" - Escapist Records
The list of great hardcore bands to come out of Northern California is a long one and with the release of "Our Last Chance" San Rafael's Changing Face can definitely be added to that list. While it may not be the most original of all offerings, the abrasive nature of the songs and the near perfect production of this CD, puts the "Our Last Chance" right up there with the best of NorCal. The thing I love most here is the production done by Phil Devereux at Deathbot Studios in Sacramento which saves the band from any lack of originality or monotony between songs. The guitar tone is harsh and abrasive, perfectly done. The drums sound big and punishing, perfectly done. Bass and vocals, ditto. If the band lacks originality they certainly more than make up for it with heart and their delivery. The band is passionate about what they're doing here and it shows. As for the music itself, it's just straight forward heavy hardcore, not too metal, not too punk. For a great taste of NorCal hardcore go with Changing Face. Check out the band's myspace page for a couple of mp3s from the seven song CD. Review by: Nick Martinson

Bleeding Through added: 03/14/06
Bleeding Through - "The Truth" - Trustkill Records
Bleeding Through is a band that I'm sure everyone here is familiar with. I've been into this band big time since the release of their first album. First time I saw them live they blew me away. Few bands do that. Their latest release, "The Truth" brings us more of that thick killer Bleeding Through sound that has made them one of the most popular hardcore/metal bands in California. The album also brings us something many of us were fearing and hoping the band would stay away from and that's clean vocals. It was almost inevitable that a band of their stature would bring them in. In most cases, bands playing their style that incorporate clean vocals and growls/screaming, I dislike. But Bleeding Through are just so damn good and so damn heavy that even with clean vocals in the mix I still can't help but love 'em. Unfortunetly between the clean vocals and upcoming Ozzfest tour it's going to very easy for people to dismiss this album and band as selling out but don't be fooled. This is one of the heaviest albums to be released as of recently. Without a doubt it easily blows their competition out of the water. Any other band doing clean/growled vocals is weak by comparison. Bleeding Through is at the top of the game here and I don't see any one knocking them off any time soon. Review by: Nick Martinson

Defiant Voice added: 03/14/06
Defiant Voice - "Constitutional"
Ex-members of Subject of Us return in Defiant Voice with a four song EP that shows a lot of promise for the band. The EP opens with the title track and first thing I'm thinking is that it's very Snapcase like. The comparison holds up throughout the rest of the songs but Defiant Voice is by no means a copy cat band. The band shows some dynamics on the second track "Vote From The Rooftops", and continue the pace on "Polishing The Brass On The Titanic". The final track, "Smudge", is the best of the lot in my opinion. Vocalist Rob has a mid-range mono tone voice and screams of politcal and social issues. I think Snapcase keeps popping up in my mind as a comparison mainly because of him. I loved Snapcase but my main criticism of them was always the mono tone vocals getting stale after extended listening. Although this is only an EP I think the band would fall into the same pitfall Snapcase did if they record a full length album. Hopefully Rob can get a little more range in his voice for the next release. All in all though a very good start for the band. I look forward to hearing more from them. Check out their website at defiantvoice.com. Review by: Nick Martinson

Boundary - "Out of Bounds Demo"
If you're going to play a style of hardcore that hundreds, if not thousands, of bands have already done, like in this case "traditional hardcore", then that's fine by me. If you're going to do it though you'd better do it right and you better put just enough of your own style into it to keep my interest even if you don't stray too far from the original formula. Boundary has done just that. Fast and energetic songs with some appropriately placed breakdowns here and there to make one killer EP. The foundation of Boundary's sound is in the youth crew/88' style of hardcore but there's definitely some newer more metal influences thrown in once and a while. Songs like "Show Your Strength" and "A Way of Life" feature some heavier riffs laced with metal whereas songs like "My Foundation" and "Out Of Bounds" are straight classic style hardcore anthems. This is the type of demo that needs a real official release either on 7inch or professional CD press. The production is perfect and I love the sound of the bass guitar in particular. This is one of the few demos I will listen to more than just a few times. Start your new year off right and get this demo. Three of the songs are on myspace.com. Check it out now. Avoid Serious Injury - "Demo"
Avoid Serious Injury comes banging out of Los Angeles with this eleven song demo CD of straight ahead fist pounding hardcore. Not too metal, not too punk, and fashion free. For the most part the music is mid tempo with lots of breakdowns and few past parts, reminiscent of long gone bands Dysphoria (PA) and Unconquered (NV). The overall quality is not bad for a self released CD. For the most part I like these guys but my main complaint is the lyrics. The song titles say it all: "My Family", "Represent", "Stay True", "Settle The Score", "Take It Back", and "Fuck You Bitch Die" amongst others... these are song titles with lyrics that we've all heard one thousand times already. Although the lyrics and themes are definitely things we can all relate to, and are important to hardcore, I think the band could be more creative in expressing them without being so cliche about it. If you're relatively new to the hardcore scene you'll probably like this CD more than me. For those like myself, who've been into hardcore a long long time, you'll appreciate the "staying true" quality of the band but you'll probably get a little bored after a few listens. Like I said earlier though, I like these guys, I just think they can probably do better and I look forward to their next release. Check them out for yourself on their myspace page at www.myspace.com/avoidseriousinjury. Review by: Nick Martinson

Starting Point added: 12/07/05
The Starting Point - "It's Something You Learn"
Wow, the more I listen to this the more I love it. For those not familiar with them, The Starting Point hails from the San Francisco Bay Area and this is their second official release (the other being a split 7inch with SoCal's Drop It). The ten songs on here really grow on you after a few listens. The Starting Point would definitely be considered a melodic hardcore band by most but the thing I love about this album is its originality. Now it's not way out there nor 100% unique, there are other bands similar to this, but the songs show that a lot of thought has gone into the writing process and they don't just copy the same old formulas like so many other bands. They have melody and dynamics without going into pop territory. The bands maintains a hardcore sound even while the melody comes across strong at times. A perfect example of this is the third track, "Let It Take You Home". It starts out like many hardcore songs; feedback wailing while bass player strums along to the drummer pounding away on the toms. The guitars kick in full blast followed by the vocals and the band is fully kicking out the fury. All of a sudden, half way through the song, the band quiets down, the vocals stop, and the claps come in. Yes, claps. 99% of the time when a band uses claps in a song it comes across as cheesy and lame. Such is not the case here. They are perfectly placed and it totally works in the song. I'd compare the moment to Gorilla Biscuits using a harmonica in the song "Start Today". Not every band can get away with a move like that. The Starting Point can and I salute them for it. From the opener, "An Introduction", to the final, "A Closing Statement", the album genuinely satisfies and I highly recommend it. For more information check out the band's website at: www.thestartingpointhc.com. Review by: Nick Martinson

No Truce added: 12/07/05
No Truce - "Tiger Style 2005" (demo)
No Truce is a new band out of Salinas and as shown by this demo, they're off to a good start. Straight forward hardcore in the style of Buried Alive, Terror, Madball, etc. There's four songs on here, all of which can be downloaded for free on the band's myspace page. It's not the most original batch of songs, in fact the second track sounds a hell of a lot like a Terror song, but No Truce is definitely going in the right direction with things. The lyrics are bland and almost cliche but as with the music I'm sure will get better over time. This band definitely has potential and I look forward to hearing future recordings. Check them out. Hoods - "The King Is Dead" - Eulogy Records
I have been a loyal fan of the Hoods since I first saw them play their first show in the Bay Area at the Berkeley Square around 10 years ago. I own all of their material that was ever released with the exception of a few compilations they were on. I hold them closer to my heart than any other hardcore band with the exception of perhaps Powerhouse. Their longevity is surpassed by few. Last summer their guitarist and main songwriter Mike Hood played me the album before it was released when they stopped on tour to play New Orleans while I was living there. After a few songs I was seriously impressed. I didn't want to say it at the time but I thought it was their best material ever. I wanted to be sure. I wanted to wait until I had the album in my hand and was able to give it time and many listens through and through. Now that it's been a month since it's been out and I've been listening to it non-stop practically I can say without a doubt that this is the best Hoods album to date and the best album of 2005. From the opening track "The King Is Dead" to their respectful tribute to Powerhouse bassist, song writer, and all around amazing guy, Ernie Cortez, who sadly passed recently, to the final track "End of Days", the album never lets down. There is no reason why anyone in the hardcore scene should not own this album. This is true hardcore. Review by: Nick Martinson

All Bets Off added: 11/18/05
All Bets Off - "We'll Die Here" - Spiderghost Press Gang
All Bets Off is a band that always seems to put me in a good mood. Even back when they first started, which I think was more or less 6 or 7 years ago now, I always had much respect for them despite some occasional shall we say, "rough", live performances. The band never followed the traditional path most hardcore bands followed and they always did their own thing despite what others said. Their songs come as a breath of fresh air in the often smog filled world of music. I think in the truest sense of the word All Bets Off is a hardcore band. However, they are a band you should keep an open mind when listening to as you don't get spoon fed the traditional hardcore formula. You won't find breakdowns or sing-a-longs in every song but you will find top notch musicianship, creativity, and thought filled and at times poetic lyrics. While the band isn't really breaking any new ground they chose to not stay on the typical paths taken by musicians or at least by those in the hardcore scene. Dynamics is something most hardcore bands don't know a thing about but All Bets Off uses them perfectly on "We'll Die Here". They know when to keep it down and when to rip your head off, moving fluidly from riff to riff and song to song. It's hard to pick any one track on here as a favorite as the album plays more as one solid piece of music rather than 9 random singles thrown together and called an album like many other bands do these days. I wouldn't do the band an injustice to compare them to anyone else but in all honesty I can't even think of a single band or two to compare them to. In Northern California the band is loved and highly cherished by many but when it comes to the hardcore scene country wide, even worldwide for that matter, All Bets Off is highly under rated and deserves much more than what they have. Do yourself a favor and pick this album up directly from Spiderghost Press Gang. You'll be missing out if you don't. It's definitely one of the best albums of 2005. Review by: Nick Martinson

By My Will added: 11/07/05
By My Will - "Bloody Knuckles" - Carjacker Records
Out of the ashes of Northern California's Fallout comes By My Will, a four piece hardcore band that is quickly on the rise. Vocalist Casey West and drummer Andy Neves from Fallout joined up with guitarist Stephan Vavasseur and bassist Rick De La Torre to form this newer group that is heavier and tighter than Fallout ever was. Fusing the tradional New York style of hardcore along the lines of Sick Of It All with newer and heavier acts like 100 Demons the band creates a very thick and aggressive sound that makes you want to punch people and break things. The EP's opener, a fierce 2 minute track entitled "Invisible Man", is one of the best hardcore songs to come out of this state in a long time. The bleak outlook in the lyrics of the title track of the EP are surely something most any hardcore kid could relate to. Nearly all the songs have mob vocals in them, an essential element in a hardcore band in my opinion, and something many "hardcore" bands lack. The production here, thanks to Castle Ultimate Studios out of Oakland, is top notch. There is very little that By My Will is doing wrong here if anything. Not much to criticize. You can get the EP through the band, their website, or direct from Carjacker Records and I'd say you were making a big mistake if you didn't. Review by: Nick Martinson

At Risk - "s/t" - Bloody Knuckles Records
Santa Cruz is not known for its hardcore bands but after this self titled release from At Risk people might to see the city a little differently. I saw these guys play at the Cave in San Jose not too long ago for the first time and in a move that is hard to do these days, they really blew me away with their performance and energy. This is the kind of true blooded hardcore that keeps me in this scene. Their sound lays in the perfect nitch between punk and metal. Too heavy to be punk and too simplistic to be metal. They've got lots of fast circle pit mosh parts, some medium tempo grooves for you people into dancing, and some breakdowns here and there perfect for some karate moves. Throw in some great lyrics about taking a stand for yourself, respect, regrets, and anger amongst other issues in addition to some powerful mob vocals and you've got yourself one excellent CD. Not the most original delivery but who cares, this is hardcore, and this is one awesome band. Check out the band's myspace page for more info on them. Review by: Nick Martinson

Dangers - "Demo 2005"
Dangers is a new band featuring Al Brown (guitarist from The Miracle Mile, been doing Sink With Cali fest in Redondo Beach the last few years and all around good dude) on vocals. This is some powerful, powerful stuff. Anyone who is a fan of The Suicide File should check this band out immediately. It's good mid-tempo hardcore with fast parts thrown in and very similar, Dave Weinberg-esque lyrics. Lyrics ranging from general disdain for common place, day-to-day living or for people who are obsessed with possessions and good looks. These are some pissed off songs that will keep you interested from start to finish. Just when you think you've got this band pegged for a certain style they throw a song at you like "Did You Just Say "Faggot"?" with some guitar parts that kind of bring to mind something Sex Positions would do. Very unique. I'm really excited to see more out of this band. Do yourself a favor and pick up this demo. This is definitely a contender for 'demo of the year' so far. Hopefully they'll be playing Sink With Cali Fest this year. www.wearedangers.com Review by: Taylor Maddox

Head High - "Demo 2005"
It's only five months into 2005 and tons of people (including myself) want to confidently dub this demo 'best of 2005'. But, common sense keeps me from making that sort of statement with so much time left in the year. Head High are a new band based out of the LA area and boast one of the best demos I've heard in a long fucking time. James from The Miracle Mile/Final Fight fronts this band and brings that same intensity to the mic as he did for TMM. The recording quality is a lot similar to TMM's "Where The Heart Is" and musically the guitar work brings to mind In My Eyes circa "Nothing To Hide" or even early Bane. Packed with ferocious vocals and sprinkled with some sweet harmonies. After listening to this demo and reading over the lyrics more and more you really start to envision how unbelievable these songs must come across live. Definitely keep an eye out for this band. Jump off the fucking pier.Review by: Taylor Maddox

Divine Romance added: 05/24/05
Divine Romance - "Postwar Tragedy"
"Postwar Tragedy" is the first release from this Sacramento based Christian band. They combine swedish style metal with melodic hardcore and a mix of screaming and clean singing in a finely recorded EP. Of the four songs on here I like the first two, "The Lingering Shadow of Betrayal" and "Postwar Tragedy", but not so much the second two; "Through Faith" and "Deathbed Conversation". The main reason why I don't like the latter two is because of the clean, very melodic, vocals. These types of vocals mixed with heavy music is usually not a combination I like and this is no exception here. Overall though this CD is very well done as far as musicianship, creativity, and production. I think Divine Romance is a band a lot of people will like but their sound is just not one that I get crazy about. For fans of Underoath, Norma Jean, etc. Check out their website at www.thedivineromance.com. Review by: Nick Martinson

If It Kills added: 05/24/05
If It Kills - "If It Kills" - Ghosttown Records
Now this is the type of hardcore I love; Fast, brutal, and hard as nails. If It Kills comes blasting out of Los Angeles and deliver an eleven track CD that clocks in at just under 13 minutes. Think Terror and Deathstar with a bit of Hatebreed thrown in. That doesn't sound like a unique style, and it's not, but If It Kills definitely hold their own. The mob vocals on here are surprisingly good. The recording quality is not the best but it has a raw sound that still shreds. My only complaint about these guys is that for the majority of the album the songs are too short. Then again though, some of the best bands have shorts songs, so maybe it's not so bad. Regardless of length this CD is something you should have in your collection. Check out the band's MySpace site for audio files. Review by: Nick Martinson

With or Without You added: 04/13/05
With or Without You - "Six Reasons To Drop Out" - Martyr Records
With or Without You, for the most part, is a mid-temp hardcore band with dashes of dark rock thrown in to the mix (think a little bit of Danzig 4). The band comes out of southern California and features ex-members of the now defunct Diehard Youth. They remind me a litle bit of San Francisco's All Bets Off but with less hooks and less talent. For the most part this is a solid record but there's little about it that really grabs me. I give them points for not sounding like everyone else but I think they need more time to perfect their sound. They're on the right path here but is just seems like something is missing. I'd be willing to bet that their next release is going to be a lot better. Let's hope so because the foundation they've laid is solid they just need to build up something better on top of it. 100 Suns - "demo 2004"
100 Suns is semi-new band out of the Bay Area playing metal with a large hardcore influence. As soon as I heard these guys I liked them. Totally metal yet somehow also totally hardcore. They could probably really be considered either but just since their music so heavy and the vocals are mostly growled I'm calling them metal. The only bands I can think to compare them to is fellow local bands All Shall Perish or Animosity. Definitely a band that will have metal heads and hardcore kids cracking skulls in the pit during a show. There's five songs on this demo. It's not the best sound quality but for a demo it's not bad, definitely listenable. No track listing or lyrics were included so I can't really say much more. Go check out four of these song on their website at www.100sunsmusic.com and you won't be dissapointed. Review by: Nick Martinson

By My Will added: 01/26/05
By My Will - "Demo 2004"
By My Will comes pounding out of Northern California with great intensity on their debut four song demo. The band features ex-Fallout (Sacramento) members Casey West (on vocals) and Andy Neves (on drums). I was never too into Fallout but the combination of Casey and Andy with guitarist Stephan Vavasseur and bassist Rick De La Torre they have created a much more powerful and tightly woven unit. They play 100% true style hardcore along the lines of Madball, Hoods, and Judge. Breakdowns, mob vocals, strong lyrics, hard as nails guitars, and a thunderous rhythm section make them a band that is quickly on the rise and sure to gain a good following in the hardcore community. The production on this demo is nearly flawless. This could have easily been a professional EP. I can't wait for them to release some more material. Be sure and check out By My Will. You can download the full demo at their website at www.bymywill.com. Review by: Nick Martinson

Actions Aside added: 01/26/05
Actions Aside - "Do You Remember When?" - Sell Our Souls Records
Ah another youth crew band. You know you would the think a band that is playing a style that comes and goes about every 2-3 years yet never changes would get old and boring but Actions Aside is anything but. To their credit though they do add a bit of originality to the typical youth crew mix but they don't stray too far from the formula. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, right? I don't remember where in California these guys are from but I guess it doesn't matter. You should have this 7inch in your collection. Order this sucker from Sell Our Souls all the way on the other side of Mother Earth in Barcelona and they'll ship it out to you pretty quick. Five songs on here ("So Many Lies", "Take It Back", "It Counts For Nothing", "When Memories Fade", and "This Fight Within") to get you finger pointing and doing pile-ons. Review by: Nick Martinson

Miracle Mile added: 01/26/05
Miracle Mile - "Future History" - Sell Our Souls Records
"Future History" is Miracle Mile's final release and it's a shame this band is calling it quits but I guess all things good have to come to an end at some point. Five songs on here including a kickass version of Nirvana's "Territorial Pissings". If you're not familiar with this NorCal band they play a heavy yet old school sound (think Negative Approach meets Judge) that's way above par on the intensity level. Miracle Mile is extremely under rated and should have been much bigger than they were. This 7inch gets more action from my turntable than most other records. Pick this EP up soon before it's gone. Review by: Nick Martinson

Deathstar added: 08/27/04
xDeathstarx - "The Triumph" - Life Sentence Records
SoCal's xDeathstarx have something most other bands don't have; Four singers. Not only that they have the rage and the talent to make one of the year's hardest and heaviest albums. Life Sentence Records delivers the goods once again! Fans of old Throwdown, Hatebreed, and Martyr AD need to have this CD. xDeathstarx are obviously a proud straight edge band but don't let that turn you away if you're not edge. They've got the rage any hardcore kid can relate to. Their guitar tone is similar to that of Slipknot but I assure you they are no nu-metal band. A lot of moments on this record remind me of Throwdown's classic album "Beyond Repair", most of which I attribute to the production and over all sound of the songs. The four singers all sound very similar which is kind of a shame. More diversity between them might make more songs stand apart from each other as the way the ten tracks are now there are no real stand out songs. It's just pure rage and hatred from start to finish. Not that this is necessarily a bad thing but it just might cause the band to become stale in time if they're not able to push their own boundaries outward a bit. Get this album here and do it now. It's a must own. Review by: Nick Martinson

Beyond Your Eyes added: 08/27/04
Beyond Your Eyes - "Foreshadows Of The Past" - www.beyondyoureyes.com
Beyond Your Eyes is a young 4-piece female fronted band from Stockton who play punk influenced melodic hardcore. Guitarist Jonathan Ramirez, bassist Rod Richenber, and drummer Tim Montalban back up vocalist Rikki Bernado as she screams and sings her way through this six song demo EP which include a cover of Model American's "We've Had Enough". Lot's of energy and fast parts to circle pit to plus some mob vocals to get you singing along at a show. Most of the songs stick to a pissed off melodic hardcore punk structure but songs like "My Scars" show more depth, versatility, and emotion to the band as they include more dynamics and thoughtful arrangement by including accoustic guitars and guitar leads/solos into the mix. Although there isn't anything in particular I dislike about the band the songs just overall lack a certain catchy-ness that I'm expecting. Beyond Your Eyes definitely has a lot of potential to be a very great band and move beyond their just so-so-ness and I definitely look forward to hearing more from them in the future. If you're into posi bands or other bands along the East Bay/Nerve Agents/Model American style then definitely check out Beyond Your Eyes. If you're looking for metalcore tough guy stuff look elsewhere. Review by: Nick Martinson

The Murder Book added: 08/15/04
Murder Book - demo 2004 www.themurderbook.com
The Murder Book is a five piece band coming out of Alta Loma, California, who play ultra heavy, metal influenced hardcore. It's hard to describe their sound exactly but I think if Converge and Madball got together, had some sex, and had a musical child, it might sound like the Murder Book. Pretty much a simplified, more traditional hardcore sounding version of Converge is what they sound like. Less chaotic but none less heavy. Quality wise this is an excellent debut release and I really dig the packaging the CD in a DVD case with custom artwork. There's four songs on here which leaves more to be desired but it's a great start. As good as it is though there is definitely room for some improvement. My only real complaint is a lack of diversity in between the songs as they stick to a pretty solid formula of alternating between fast mosh beats and breakdowns. With song titles like "Dead Celebrity", "Drinking Silver", "The Merry-Go-Round Broke Down", and "Some Kind of Feeling", you might think the lyrics were very poetic but thankfully they're not. The lyrics play like an exorcism of pain and hatred and are well written. Overall an intense record which makes me want to hear more. Lot's of energy. Good stuff. Check out their website to download the EP. Review by: Nick Martinson

A18 added: 06/18/04
A18 - "Dear Furious" - Victory Records
This is definitely my favorite A18 release to date. Better production and overall just a stronger record then Foreverafternothing. Very solid. For those whop have not heard SoCal's A18 they play pretty straight forward hardcore... mix some Cro-Mags, Sick Of It All, and the occasional Snapcase style groove, and you've got a loose idea of what A18 sounds like. Not too many stand out tracks but overall solid hardcore anthems from start to finish. The energy never dies down. The track "Beating a Dead Horse" features guest vocals from Terror's Scott Vogel. Not a whole lot to say but if you like real hardcore, not metalcore or any other shit, this is one record you should own. Review by: Nick Martinson

Jealous Again - "Demo 2004"
In a way, this is a brilliant concept record. All the song titles, soundbites and actual CD art are taken from one of the finest films ever, The Evil Dead, and it's done in a really original manner. The music itself is awesome. Hard edged youth crew with lots of dance parts, drawing from both the old and new school. Lyrics are not related to Ash and his battles with the undead, but speak on various personal and political ideas, all of which are intelligent and thought provoking. The recording is another triumph for Zack Ohren and Castle Ultimate. I just can't say enough good things about this disc. Get it. Now. - Review by: Kirby Unrest

Actions Aside - "Just Another Scar"
I've been hearing about these kids for a while but haven't had a chance to check them out live or on disc. I'm told this is their first demo, and it's not bad. Kind of reminds me of early Stretch Armstrong, with bits of Dag Nasty, Slapshot and maybe some In My Eyes. The screamy vocals are decent, but I don't like it when he goes into "talking" mode. Recording is good, not perfect, but good. Most of the tracks have lyrical content regarding "stabbed in the back" situations. One thing that stood out for me here was the lack of mosh parts. There are a couple, and I'm not saying it's a bad thing; just interesting. I give them respect for not relying on breakdowns and two step opportunities to fill up their songs, though this is a solid soundtrack for circle pits. With some work, I can see these guys going places. - Review by: Kirby Unrest

Hammertime - "Demo 2004"
What time is it???? It's Hammertime!!!! Straight up circle pit mayhem with short and spiteful lyrics, and plenty of attitude. No gimmicks, just hardcore the way it was. No crossover, just mosh. If you dig early to mid 80's hc/punk, or are a fan of revival bands like Bones Bridge and Cut The Shit, pick this up and be on the lookout for a formal release with Titlefight Records. - Review by: Kirby Unrest

The Kill - "Demo 2004"
Hailing from Redding, California, The Kill, despite have a less than perfect recording, still come across with moshy youth crew that will have kids moving quicker than you can say "fuck shit up." They experiment a bit, and throw in hints of noisecore and metal, and it helps things from getting stale. All this band needs is a better studio/producer, and then there will be no stopping them. I also have to give them props for the unique packaging, and the great clip at the end of the final track. - Review by: Kirby Unrest

Please Please - "Demo 2004"
Six songs, twelve minutes and a lot of different directions. Rising from the ashes of The Romance Of Crime, Sacramento's Please Please work hardcore, punk, metal, and who knows what else into their demo, and actually make it work fairly well. Not saying this is exactly my thing, but I dug their ability to transverse a variety of ground with explosive ease, taking things to genre defying depths. If you like bands that aren't afraid to try something new, look these dudes up. - Review by: Kirby Unrest

Murder My Love added: 03/04/04
Murder My Love - "demo" - www.murdermylove.com
There are very few bands that combine heavy music with melody that I like, especially when they have clean vocals, but Murder My Love is a band I can't help but love. Three new songs here that continue along the same path as their 5 song EP (read my review on this page) and like their previous CD, I can't stop listening to it. These guys are just too good. "David The Gnome" opens up the demo and right away I'm again impressed. "Helmet" and "In Loving Memory of Jack Tripper" follow without losing any intensity. Murder My Love blend melody and brutality flawlessly. I love the vocals. Jim goes from a scream to real singing and sounds great on both ends. Backing vocals from guitarist Scott compliment and fit perfect with Jim's main vocals. The band is dynamic and tight and the song writing is far above the hardcore standard. Their sound is so diverse it would appeal to both the underground and the mainstream. Assuming they don't change too much I could see these guys getting big without losing their integrity in the hardcore scene. If you have yet to hear Murder My Love you are missing out on some great music. Go to their website, go to their shows, check them out. You will not be dissapointed.

More To Pride added: 02/18/04
More To Pride - "Demo 2003"
More To Pride come out of Southern California and deliver a strong 4 song demo. Nothing ground breaking here but just solid old school hardcore in the style of bands like Judge, Chain of Strength, etc. Songs are about staying true, shit talkers, and hard times. You can download the song "Leaving So Soon" from their website at http://moretopride.vze.com. The recording is pretty average for a demo. Not pro but definitely listenable. There isn't a whole lot to say about these guys except if you like old school hardcore without a trace of metal, check them out.

Every Second Counts - "demo"
Solid old school hardcore from California, with youth crew trademarks, classic appeal and melodic energy while maintaining mosh standards. Though the recording is completely atrocious, the talent this band exudes is obvious if you listen close. Good lyrics, amazing riffs and plenty of good times packed into four tracks lend this band all the credit they need. Matched up with a quality studio/producer and I see big things in store for Every Second Counts. Fans of Stay Gold, Go It Alone, Count Me Out and Faded Grey need to check them out. - Review by: Kirby Unrest

XCherishX - "From The Heart (demo)"
Sacramento, California's latest sensation is XCherishX, a band comprised of ex-members of Broke Free and For The Crown. Drawing their sound from the styles of their former acts, as well as incorporating brand new ideas, XCherishX dispenses six tracks of mosh fueled, metal tinged straight edge powered youth crew goodness with their debut demo. Beginning with "I Believe", XCherishX will have kids screaming the refrain of "If I believe than others will follow, let my heart be the torch that lights the way" in no time, over and over again. Tracks like "For Yourself" and "Still Standing" remind me of Floorpunch, Ten Yard Fight and In My Eyes while "Warning To The Weak" and "Straight Edge Strong" are heavier, more chugga chugga core in a way, coming off in a distinctly Strife like fashion. The final, self-titled cut is more melodic, slow and plodding, and decent overall. The lyrics speak on familiar topics, while a good recording helps to drive their point home. Simple but solid guitar riffs, tight basswork, furious drumming and in your face vocals showcase XCherishX as an act coming "from the heart" and bringing it back… - Review by: Kirby Unrest

Miracle Mile - "demo" - self released
L.A's The Miracle Mile bust out 6 tracks of amazing youth crew hc on their demo cd. This disc is pretty old and the band has since released a full length on Western Front but I really enjoyed it and felt it deserved a review. Very much in the vein of Give Up The Ghost, Carry On, Down To Nothing and Allegiance, The Miracle Mile have fast parts, good breakdowns and introspective lyrics that make them stand out in a sea of similar sounding acts. The recording is a little hollow and off in spots, but it doesn't overshadow the quality tracks here. This band clearly shows why California is still the place to catch some of the best up and coming acts. - Review by: Kirby Unrest

Animosity added: 09/28/03
Animosity - "Shut It Down" - Tribunal Records
When Animosity first started pretty much everyone in the San Francisco/NorCal area who saw them play live thought they were really good for being so young. Now a few years later, all references to their ages can be thrown out the window. Whether they were 14, 24, or 34, it wouldn't matter. "Shut It Down" is a brutal record that will kick your ass regardless of their age or yours. Stand out favorite tracks of mine are "Saved", "24 More", "Leashes", and "Life Advocate". A lot of bands are playing this ultra heavy, metal influenced hardcore with the focus maybe coming from bands like Dying Fetus, but Animosity plays this style so well you can't possibly ignore them. The quality of this ten song debut CD of theirs is top notch in all departments. I've also got to say that even lyrically these guys are superior to most other bands. If you've ever gone through some hard times you'll be able to identify with the well written lyrics. I can't say enough good things about Animosity. Just do yourself a favor and go find this CD and buy it. animosityhxc.cjb.net

Clearing Autumn Skies added: 09/28/03
Clearing Autumn Skies - "Pulses and Matter" - State of Grace Records
Clearing Autumn Skies is from the Bay Area and play a sort of nu-metal/hardcore/Candira mix of heavy music combined with melody. This 4 song EP sounds like a high quality demo with production that could have been better but certainly isn't hard on the ears. Maybe it's the production, I can't quite put my finger on it, but this CD just isnt catching me. The drummer obviously knows his shit and it sounds like they're trying to be atleast somewhat original but perhaps these guys still have some evolving to do. I'll keep an ear out for new material coming from these guys but right now "Pulses and Matter" isn't doing much for me. www.clearingautumnskies.com.

Beneath The Ashes added: 09/11/03
Beneath The Ashes - "Nailed To Your Ruins" - State of Grace Records
North California's Beneath The Ashes have been around a few years but this is their first officially released album. "Nailed To Your Ruins" contains a potent mix of brutality, melody, and technicality that will be pleasing to both fans of hardcore and metal. A wide range of influences can be heard on this release. Fans of Undying, Sepultura (Chaos-AD era), As I Lay Dying, Shai Hulud, Overcast, Arch Enemy, Dillenger Escape Plan, and other such bands will be probably like Beneath The Ashes. Most of the songs follow a similar pattern but standout tracks like "The Stars That Rose When I Set Out For You" and "Bled" showcase more dynamics in the band's playing and a more thoughtful song structure. Overall I'd say a worthy CD to have in your collection. While not the most original CD around, it's energy and aggression leaves me wanting little more.

As I Lay Dying added: 09/11/03
As I Lay Dying - "Frail Words Collapse" - Metal Blade Records
As I Lay Dying is from Southern California and they sound very much like Beneath The Ashes. In fact the bands sound so much alike you can just read the above review of BTA and all the same things apply to As I Lay Dying. The only difference is As I Lay Dying has blast beats every now and then and double kick beats. There's a some good songs ("Falling Upon Deaf Ears", "Forever",..) but too many bands sound like this. It's time to try something new folks.

Something Must Die added: 08/20/03
Something Must Die - "Riding In An Ambulance"
Fans of Shai Hulud, here's a band for you. Something Must Die combine the heaviest riffs and some very melodic ones with sick screamed vocals (in a bit of Neurosis-esque way) and a lot of double-kick and tight drumming for a lethal combination of hardcore. Although I say it's for fans of Shai Hulud I don't mean to say that Something Must Die has ripped their sound off or anything, it's just a similar style which Shai Hulud is best known for. Anyway, most of their songs are in that veign but songs like "Embrace The Faultline" explore more of a progressive syncopated style akin to a band like Candiria with a bit of a jazz influence. "Broken Ladder" does a almost a total one-eighty from the other songs and is a melodic ballad, dare I say? Most of the songs are really heavy and it's nice to see a band that's not affraid to go all over the musical spectrum. Overall a very cool CD and one I'll be listening to quite a bit and have been already. These SF Bay Area guys know what they're doing and they're doing it well. Check out their website at - http://www.somethingmustdie.net.

Murder My Love added: 07/02/03
Murder My Love - "demo"
Murder My Love is a fairly new band out of San Diego but has members who have been around awhile and played in such bands as Forced Life, Above This World, Over My Dead Body, and Malachi Crunch. The band plays a nearly equal blend of rock and hardcore that's a step above the rest of the bands trying this same formula. The demo's opener, "Tom Brokaw", is a potent mix of raw energy and melody with an awesome display of dynamics. For all of us hardcore fans, this song is surely a killer at a live show. Track two, "Post Life" continues with the energy, while "Bled For Nothing" slows it down a little and concentrates more on melody than raw aggression. Both songs are great. The demo's last track, "Creation of Agni" picks the pace back up and is an excellent finish for the demo. There's a wide range of influences that the band displays and they cover just about every aspect of the heavy music spectrum. From rock to metal and everything in between there's a little for everyone but all in all I'd say their feet were grounded in hardcore. There isn't any single band I could compare Murder My Love to and I wouldn't think it fair to the band to do so. It's very aparent they are doing what they want to without regard for trying to be cool with any particular crowd. Murder My Love has talented musicians and a talented vocalist making rad music... why would you NOT listen to them? I don't know so go download their song "Post Life" from the Media page and then go to their website at http://www.murdermylove.com.

Taste of Blood added: 07/02/03
The Taste of Blood - "demo"
The Montery/Santa Cruz area isn't home to many hardcore bands but The Taste of Blood is one of them. Musically they sound like a cross of Dying Fetus and Converge with a lot of breakdowns thrown in with mid-range screams. The recording quality isn't great on here but it could be worse. The overall sound is pretty flat so I think a lot of the energy and intensity the band probably has is not being reflected but overall not too bad of a demo. While it's not something I'd listen to a whole lot, mostly because of the quality, it isn't something I'm tossing in the garbage. For the most part the music itself and vocals seem like average At The Gates influenced metal/hardcore with an occasional part that sparks my interest here and there. Did I mention there's breakdowns? Yeah, there's plenty of those. Supposedly they have a new release coming out soon which is 10 times better so I won't be too judgemental on this demo but I'll be looking forward to hearing the new stuff. It very well could rock hard and hopefully they've progressed more into their own sound. Check out their website at http://www.tasteofblood.cjb.net.

Twilight Transmission added: 06/12/03
The Twilight Transmission - "Seperate Connections" - Woodboy Records
The Twilight Transmission is a four piece group out of North Hollywood that doesn't really fit into the spectrum of hardcore sounding bands but they still deliver a great nine song CD. While I wouldn't say they were a hardcore band I think I would call them hard indie rock. I'd compare them to a band like At The Drive In, while not sounding like a copy of them or anything, just the same style of music. The first song on the album, "Sleepers", is the most hardcore sounding of the lot and one of the catchiest tunes on the CD. I'm first reminded of Both Worlds (the band fronted by ex-Cro Mags vocalist John Joseph) mostly because The Twilight Transmission's singer often sounds like John Joseph on that record. The music for the most part on this album is melodic but still has plenty of aggression and backbone. I think most of fans of post-hardcore bands would be into these guys. I really dig the first half of the album but the second half loses some punch for me with the expection perhaps of the song "Mayday" which at times has a good Snapcase-ish groove. Overall a good release which I've listened to a lot since receiving it. Check it out if you want something a little different. Really cool artwork on the CD too by the way.

Consign added: 06/12/03
Consign - "All Heroes Lost" demo
My first impression of this demo is "Fuck, this sounds good!" Consign is a band that just started this year and is comprised of members ranging in age from 15-17 who all live in the East Bay Area. They play metalcore that has tons of breakdowns and even some blast beats. The vocals for the most part and high pitch screams but there is an occasional death metal growl thrown in from time to time. I'd compare this to the Dillenger Escape Plan and other bands like them. This isn't the most original release but it certainly kicks a lot of ass. Most of the songs, although quite technical, follow a similar pattern and sound. The one standout track I think is the last one, "Can Kill In One Feeding", which starts out a little more melodic in a bit of a Shai Hulud way. Consign plays the type of metalcore that could get just about anyone moving at a show. These are definitely a group of kids to look out for. Check out their website at http://www.consignhc.com.

Fallen Angel added: 06/12/03
Fallen Angel - "The Last Time I Was Roses" - Liberty Records .Net
Southern California is home to many great bands and Fallen Angel is one of them. Imagine At The Gates with breakdowns and you've got something close to what Fallen Angel sounds like. While At The Gates is an obviously huge influence on the band they are by no means a carbon copy of the great Swedish At The Gates. The music is very tight and well produced but to me it isn't pulling enough of its own weight for me to get into. What I mean is that it just isn't original enough and they play a style that a lot of bands are trying to do these days. This metalcore/thrash/swedish metal with breakdowns and guitar harmonies is old news to me and doesn't sound fresh. Fallen Angel does what they do extremely well, complete with some surprisingly good guitar solos here and there, but I need a bit more originality to keep me listening over and over again. I'll definitely be keeping an ear out for these guys though, because like I said, they're doing what they do great, but for now I probably won't be popping this CD into my player all that much. Check them out though because I'm sure a lot of people who aren't so picky and anal about their music like I am will like Fallen Angel.

Heartriot added: 04/20/03
Heartriot - "Hands.Blood.Freedom" - For The Core Records
Southern California is known for having more melodic hardcore bands than other areas of California and Tehachapi's Heartriot fit right in with them. Heartriot also throws in a healthy dose of mob vocals and sing-alongs which no doubt make for a good live show. All in all when it comes down to it there isn't a whole lot that is impressing me about this record but then again there isn't anything in particular that turns me off. Most of the songs are pretty standard for melodic hardcore and there isn't much in the songs to seperate themselves from eachother. The only standout track I really like is "Time Exists In Age", the last song on the album. The recording quality and production could be better and perhaps it holds the energy of this release back. Most of the songs are fast and a little catchy with lyrics dealing with both personal and light political issues. Overall an average debut release. While I wouldn't rush out to buy this, I'll keep my eyes on these guys because they do have the potential to go somewhere.

Shattered Screams added: 04/19/03
Shattered Screams - "Essence Of War" - demo
Shattered Screams come out of the SF Bay Area and deliver an excellent sounding self-released demo EP of hardcore on the metallic/metalcore side of things. Three tracks and a bonus song all of which are superbly produced and recorded. Strong musicianship all around, especially in the drumming department where the double bass parts really stick out. The vocals range from high pitch screams to low growls that are almost in the death metal range. The opening songs, "Essence of War" and "October Skies" are solid songs and sound much a like. The EP's third song "Skylar" shows a little more creativity in the song writing and showcases more dynamics in the band. The bonus track takes a slight turn from the rest of the EP and has a vibe that's close to what Candiria might produce (but faster) mixed with the style of the previous songs. It seems a lot of bands from Northern California are gravitating towards this style of hardcore that Shattered Screams plays; hardcore that's heavily influenced by metal, particularly swedish metal bands like Arch Enemy, In Flames, and At The Gates, so they don't get originality mark but for what they're doing, they're doing it very well. If you're into bands like Undying and Bleeding Through you'll no doubt like Shattered Screams. Go to the bands page for a link to their website where you can download three of the songs.

Terror added: 03/05/03
Terror - "Lowest of the Low" - Bridge Nine Records
SoCal's Terror have quickly risen to become one of many hardcore kid's favorites bands and for all the right reasons. Terror has everything a hardcore kid like myself would want to hear; Extremely aggressive and hard hitting music that stays true to its hardcore roots and doesn't get too metal or too punk rock. There's 9 kickass songs on "Lowest of the Low" that are perfect to vent out your frustrations to and to get you moving at a show. Tracks "Better Off Without You" and "Push It Away" are stand out favorites of mine and this album has been played in my CD player more than just about anything else I've gotten in the last few months. At the year's end it will definitely be up for album of the year in my book and the books of many others I'm sure. Fans of bands like American Nightmare (or American Nothing or whatever the fuck they're called these days) will definitely love this record. In fact I think just about anyone into hardcore will dig this record. Bands like Terror give the California Hardcore scene a great face. "Lowest of the Low" is a 10 out of 10 and a must have record. Go get it.

Against The Ropes added: 03/05/03
Against The Ropes - "Tetris Is My Favorite Porno" - demo
Against The Ropes come screaming out of Orange County and play old school punk influenced hardcore in the vein of bands like Agnostic Front but also include more chaotic metal influences into their formula as well. A short demo of only 3 songs leaves me wanting to hear more from these guys to get a better idea of what they're about. Not the best demo I've heard but far from the worst. The demo does generate more interest from me in the band which I guess is what the ultimate point of making a demo is in the first place. The production quality is average for a demo and it's certainly listenable but they've left a lot of room for improvement. While I don't think Against The Ropes is the next "big thing" they're a new band that's worth keeping an eye on and worth looking into. Expect an mp3 soon but in the meantime check out their website at http://www.geocities.com/xagainsttheropesx/atr.html or e-mail them at xagainsttheropesx@yahoo.com.

Fate 13 added: 03/05/03
Fate Thirteen - "Demo 2002" - demo
This demo is the type of demo I like to get from a band. Fate Thirteen has been around a couple of years now and this is the second cd of theirs to land in my hands. I am extremely happy to hear a lot of improvement in the group in all areas. The review of their last demo I blasted them for sounding too much like Converge and having somewhat annoying clean vocals (which were mixed with growls/screams). Since then they have progressed musically and created a sound more their own and the singer seems more comfortable in creating the harsh sounds from his throat that he does and ditched the melodic clean singing. The music is still in the Converge/Walls of Jericho/Undying style but they have enough of their own flavor to set themselves apart from those bands and enough talent to put them up to par with them. This demo has been in my CD player a lot the last few weeks and is definitely something I'd recommend checking out. Fate Thirteen is probably one of the more under-rated bands in the Cali scene. Expect an mp3 or two soon.

Jim Jones Brigade added: 03/05/03
Jim Jones Brigade - "Insurretion" - demo
This demo has been in my hands for a couple of months now (sorry for the late review guys!) and since I got it their singer Matt parted ways with the group so this review is a little out dated so I'll make it short and to the point. The band comes out of Campbell, CA and plays old school based posi-core style hardcore. It's extremely energetic and moving. I think musically they're great. The demo sounds really good and the production and mix were all done really well. My only complaint about the CD is the vocals. They're high pitched and annoying. But now that their singer is no longer in the band it doesn't matter. Hopefully the new guy sounds a lot better. Go to their website at http://www.jimjonesbrigade.com and the Media page to hear them because they're pretty rad and they're not metalheads disguising themselves as hardcore kids.

Playing Dead added: 01/23/03
Playing Dead - "Horrorshow EP" - demo
The "Horror Show EP" is the first demo from NorCal's Playing Dead. Although this CD lacks in terms of production the music contained within the EP is a solid dose of metalcore. The music is heavy and has plenty of breakdowns for some good pit action at a live show. For the most part the music is mid-tempo to slow and contains hardly any fast parts. My biggest complaint, even despite the poor recording quality, is the vocals. Maybe they sound as bad as they do because of the recording process but they turn me off a lot from the music. The vocals are way too high in pitch and far too distorted for me and I think they take away from the power of the band. Musically I'd compare them to Chaos AD/Roots era Sepultura with more breakdowns. There's five songs on here and I'd say my favorite out of the bunch is "Untill I Bloom" which shows a little more uniqueness than the other tracks and is more dynamic as well. The demo is nothing original really but I've certainly heard worse and overall I'd say it was not too bad for a newer band on the scene and for a first demo. I'll be looking forward to hearing future releases from these guys. Despite a less than perfect demo I think they've got a lot of potential to grow into a really tight band. Check their website out at http://www.playingdead.cjb.net and/or go to the media page here to download a track from the demo.

The Subject of Us added: 01/23/03
The Subject of Us - "The Subject of Us" - EP - Reactivation Media
The Subject of Us have sent me what I'd consider one of the best hardcore EPs to have been released in 2002. Everything about this EP surprised me in a good way. The band takes from a wide range of influences and has laid an extremely solid musical foundation down and built some great songs on top of it. The production quality is top notch for a hardcore record without sounding too overly polished and yet captures the emotion and energy that all hardcore records should have. Throw some dynamics into the songs (always a bonus in my book), which they've done, and you got four excellent songs here. According to their bio they draw influences from Black Flag, Fugazi, Sick Of It All, Refused, and Snapcase and I think that's pretty obvious when listening to them altough they do not sound like a carbon copy of any of those bands, they definitely hold their own. The four songs on here, "Preclusion", "Pictures and Words", "Into Distress", and "Experience To Self Explore", together clock in at about ten minutes making the EP a short one but it's ten minutes worth of music you can listen to over and over again and not get bored with, a true sign of a band that knows what it's doing. Go to the media page and download "Into Distress" and then go to their website at http://www.thesubjectofus.com and check them out.

Skare Tactic - "This World" - demo CD
Skare Tactic come pounding out of the Los Angeles area with a 6 song demo CD that will most definitely satisfy just about any hardcore kid's taste. With a sound in the NJHC veign or almost like a cross between old Biohazard and the now defunct Crown of Thornz they deliver a powerful force with exceptionally heavy breakdowns and mosh beats. Mid range angst filled screams round out the band and through each of the six songs on here they never let down with the energy. Every song is fast and leads into really heavy breakdowns which would make for great pit action. Throw in plenty of good choruses to scream along with and you've got one really good record. There's not much else I can say except for to check these guys out for sure. They've definitely got their shit together and are worth looking into if you're not already familiar with them. Go to their website at http://www.scaretactic.com and download some of their music or order their CD.

Iron Sharpens Iron - demo CD
I'm not sure where to start with this review so I'll just kind of dive in. Overall this demo from Iron Sharpens Iron is OK. I'm sure a lot of people will like it more than I do though. At times it is really cool. For the most part the musicianship is excellent, the drumming strikes me as particularly tight, and the band plays pretty agressives new school metalcore with mid/high end vocals that I generally like. The one thing that turns me off at times though is when the vocalist sings clean and it sometimes borders on rapping. If the singer didn't do that I'd dig these guys a lot more. Through listening to the whole demo I'd say the music is slightly above average in how good it is and the vocals are slightly below giving the disk an over all somewhat forgettable experience. However this band seems to have a lot of potential so I will definitely keep my ears on what these guys are up to. Check out their website at http://www.isibrigade.com.

V/A - "The Time Is Near" - Seventhseal Records
This is a 3 way split compilation of SoCal bands Wrecking Ball, Engraved, and Life or Death. The first 5 songs come from Wrecking Ball and instantly impress me. They've got a killer super heavy sound that digs right under my skin and make me want to get up and break something. In my opinion they're easily the best band on here and I will definitely be looking for more from these guys. Musically I'd compare them to Hatebreed and Cro-Mags with vocals a little higher than those of Hatebreed's. Next up on the CD is the metal band Engraved. Overall I'd say they were pretty cool but I found they're tracks to get a little monotonous and boring. They're play death metal with slight hardcore edge similar to Skinless or Dying Fetus. Last up on the disc is Life or Death who are in the same veign of hardcore as Wrecking Ball but aren't quite as good. They pack a powerful punch but they don't get me up and moving quite as much as Wrecking Ball does. I think this band would be really good live though. I can see people going pretty crazy for them. Overall this disk is definitely worth getting. The Wrecking Ball tracks alone are worth the price.

V/A - "True Until Death" - United Edge Records
This was a surprise CD that landed in my mail from Europe. It features a bunch of California bands on it. Hoods, SEED, Fallout, Edge of Mortality, and Contenders For The Crown managed to secure spots on this comp. Also on the CD is Finer Truth, This Day Forth, Day of Mourning, Engage, The Witness Protection Program, Burden, Dissent, Forthcoming, Path Less Taken, xDisciplex, I Refuse, Set Aside, and In.Dying.Days. These bands span from all over the U.S, Europe, and Canada. This is acutally quite an impressive comp. Lot's of killer bands. Most of which are the really heavy/metalcore end of the hardcore spectrum. Definitely pick this up if you can find it.

V/A - "A Breed Apart: On The Outside Looking In" - Hatecore Records
The only band on this compilation that is from California is the Bay Area's Through It All. They've got two songs on here; "Revolution" and "In You". Both are pretty good but suffer a bit from poor recording quality (mostly a bad mix). The song "In You" is super catchy and has a very old school oi/punk rock feel. Other bands that round out this comp are Everybody Gets Hurt (fuckin' awesome song), Hated and Proud, Crowd Detergent, Combat 84, Clenched Fist, Insult To Injury, Nothing Personal (big time Agnostic Front influece but with some goofy lyrics), Empire Falls, and 100 Demons. 100 Demons takes best song award with "Ne Desit Virtus". Overall not to bad of a comp. I'm really not a huge fan of comps because I don't think they're listenable on high repeat basis but this one ain't bad. The 100 Demons and Everybody Gets Hurt tracks are almost worth it alone.

Hell Crew - "Hellcore" - demo CD
Sacramento's Hell Crew finally put out a demo and damn does it deliver. 5 songs of hardcore that are mixed up with a bit of death and black metal. The opening track "Stained Glass Promises" is one of the best songs I've heard in a while. It's hard to compare Hell Crew to any other band so I won't even try but it's hardcore with a super thick and heavy guitar sound, solid drumming, and vocals that range from low death growls to high screams to a more mid level hardcore yell. Anybody into heavy music should be into this. It has definite metal elements to please any metalhead while songs like "Die Alone" could get any hardcore kid moshing along. This is one of the few demos that I've listened to repeatedly. Overall good production and sound. Hell Crew is definitely a band to check out. Contact Buriedinhell@yahoo.com to get this demo.

Disarm - "Demo 2001"
"Damn". That was my first impression after about 30 seconds of hearing this demo. I didn't think bands from SoCal played hardcore like Disarm does. For the most part bands from SoCal that I've heard have either been very old school sounding or totally new school chaotic metalcore. Disarm comes pounding through with some very excellent straight forward NY style hardcore. Mix up some Earth Crisis, Hatebreed, and Madball and you've got something similar to Disarm. Solid recording quality for a demo and 6 songs to keep me satisfied. These guys have been around for a year and half and come out of the Inland Empire area of SoCal. I can't believe I hadn't heard anything about these guys until now. I bet they put on a killer live show. Anyway, check these guys (and gal) out at http://www.xdisarmx.com or e-mail g_core@yahoo.com

Conscientious Objector - "s/t" - Unrest Records
There must be something in the water here in California because I can't remember when the last time it was that I got a demo or CD from a Cali band that sucked. The last demo in my pile to review is from Conscientious Objector and again there's nothing but kick ass music blasting from my stereo's speakers. One thing off the bat I like about C.O is while they're totally a hardcore band I can't think of anyone that they sound like. The music is heavy and packs a punch but these guys know when to turn it down a bit, making you think you're in for some more mellow music, but then they turn it right back around and run you over again. Excellent recording quality and 6 killer songs. This CD should appeal to a wide range of people. There are super heavy breakdowns, great vocals, and some mellow parts. The song writers of this band definitely are a bit more talented then your average hardcore kid. The arrangements are done nicely and the song writing is solid. If you want to hear something a little different check out Conscientious Objector.

Hoods - "Time... The Destroyer" - Victory Records
Finally after 6+ years of existence the Sacramento Hoods get the break they deserve and land a deal with Victory Records. "Time The Destroyer" has 15 tracks of unforgiving punishing hardcore (12 tracks listed, 3 bonus tracks). About half of the songs are new ones we haven't heard before on any recording and the rest are re-recorded versions of older classics. My expectations for this album were low because I had not been impressed with the newer songs live before this was released but after numerous listens I'm really getting into them. In my opinion this record is not as intense as the "Alone" EP but it still is leaps and bounds over what many bands are doing today, showing that the Hoods are at the forefront of their game. My main and only major complaint about this record is that the vocals should have been mixed higher. This isn't really a complaint, more of an observation, but Ben's vocals are also completely different sounding then past efforts. He went for a much lower growl this time and you can hardly understand a word he says (this is also partly due to him being mixed to low). Of the new songs on here there are some really good ones and some slightly above mediocre ones. The songs "Life", "Time... The Destroyer", and "Citrus Heights" are the better of the bunch. Overall the new songs are good but tend to all blend together and there isn't much to set them apart from one another. Of the new tracks "Life" is my favorite lyrically, opening with "It means everything, everything just fucking died". The older songs that have been re-recorded are also good but none as good as the originals. The 3 bonus songs on here ("Once Again '2001'", "Vain", and "Cycle") are from a different recording session then the previous 12 tracks and again, aren't as good as the versions that were on the "Alone" EP. Overall this album is not as good as I had hoped, being that the Hoods are one of my top 5 favorite hardcore bands, but it still delivers and is 100% Hoods all the way. I love the album but I wouldn't put it in the classic must own pile of hardcore albums like the "Alone" EP is.

Powerhouse "What Lies Ahead" - Resurrection-AD Records
After what seems like to many years of waiting we finally get the new Powerhouse record. After all this waiting I am very relieved that this record does not suck. Powerhouse has been playing many of these songs live for awhile now so I knew it would be good but this was even better then I expected. Excellent recording quality (very similar to the last record "No Regrets") and 13 songs of pure OBHC excellence. The songs on "What Lies Ahead" aren't quite as fast as some of their older stuff but Powerhouse still brings us the classic hardcore we need. If you're into Sick Of It All, Madball, and classic NYHC you'll love this album. It often reminds me of "Blood, Sweat, and No Tears" by SOIA, but with a little Westcoast/Oakland flavor to it. This album is definitely in my top 5 albums of the year list and I don't think there are any future releases this year that could knock it off. If you haven't bought this album yet do yourself a favor and go to your local record store and pick it up.

Until We Break "Demo"
Until We Break is a new band out of the East Bay and this is their 5 song demo CD. It's pretty obvious from this demo that they're a new band but the good thing is it shows lot's of potential. The main problem is the poor recording quality but underneath it you can tell there's some good things happening. It's basic hardcore, lot's of fast parts, and breakdowns with mob vocals (mob vocals always are a bonus in my book). Although I won't be listening to this demo much after this review, I will be looking forward to catching these guys live and hearing what they have to put out in the future, as it will no doubt be some good stuff. Contact the band at tw9y@go.com.

Fallout - "Live and Learn"
Sacramento's Fallout brings us their debut CD "Live and Learn" and delivers a mighty punch with just 6 songs. The disk opens up with "loyalty and Love" and I'm reminded of "Wise To The Game" by 25 Ta Life. The other 5 songs are more in the Madball vein although they certainly hold their own and aren't a carbon copy by any means. I really like the recording quality on this CD. It's raw but still sounds great. Everything is mixed well and improvements really aren't necessary. Fallout has improved greatly over the couple of years they've been around with the song writing getting better as well as the overall performance and sound of the band. Overall these guys are playing true hardcore. No melodic bullshit and no metal, just 100% pissed off hardcore. Add in plenty of mob vocals with that and what we've got here is solid hardcore record. Check out their website at www.sactofallout.com. Contact fallout_sacto@hotmail.com to get the CD and more info.

Fate Thirteen - "The Evolution of Modern Rock"
Fate Thirteen come in with a new 9 song full length CD. For the most part I really dig this band, but I often am turned off by them due to their singers clean tone melodic/emo vocals which I'm not to into. On some songs it's not so bad, while others it is. Musically these guys play in the same veign as 18 Visions, Converge, and Today Is The Day and certain can play their instruments well. The music is played very well with a good sound and certainly would get me moving at a show. When the vocal aren't clean they have mid to low end scream that sounds really cool and I definitely think they should just stick with that style instead of mixing it up. My favorite song on here is probably "Nothing Moving Under The Sun" which features some great guitar work and plenty of breakdowns. Check out the band's website at http://www.listen.to/xFate13x for more info.

Animosity "demo"
San Francisco's Animosity return with a new 3 song demo. They've improved greatly in all areas in the short time since they released their last demo. Even though these guys are freshman in high school they're playing metalcore heavier and harder then guys twice their age. I'm blown away everytime I hear these guys. They're going to rule us all one of these days. Although short in length, "Legacy of Humanity", "Stand Strong", and "Hellraiser" are 3 songs that deliver every second. Get in touch with these guys at leormiller@excite.com.

V/A "Ascend From The Darkness" - Dark Vision Records
I was anticipating this CD for awhile and for one main reason: HELL CREW. Hell Crew fucks a lot of shit up and have become one of my favorite bands from California. They have a previously unavailable track (since their demo has taken forever to get out) called "Stained Glass Promises". This tracks sounds a lot better then their track on the "Worldwide" comp from Westcoast Worldwide which didn't have the greatest mix. Anyway, over all this is a pretty good compilation of up and coming bands, mostly from California, but not limited to our great power efficient savy state. Other bands on here include 78 Days After Death, Beneath The Ashes, Execution Style, Existence (killer metalcore from Reno), S.E.E.D., Embrace The End, Sworn Vengeance, Period of Decline, Scrubs, Freakhayride, Step (see review below on how much these guys kick ass), Inner Struggle (now defunct, they've got a surprisingly good track on here), This Burns Clean, Fallout, Thinkfast, Lost Cause, Craig, and Arma Angelus. Just about all the bands on here are newer school metalcore style and although I find the style becoming rather stale in most cases, many of the bands on here have their own unique sound that is keeping the scene fresh.

Step "The Anticipation of Letting Go" - Illumina Productions
I'm at a loss on how to describe this hardcore band from the Lake Tahoe area of California. Step is uncombarable to any band as far as I can tell. The sound on this CD is top notch and the songs are excellent. Actually the only band that comes to mind when I listen to this is NJ Bloodline, but that's a long shot. Step is definitely a band to check out. There's 6 songs on this CD and all of them are good. There's mob vocals, breakdowns, and mosh parts all done in a fairly unique way. E-mail xstepx@hotmail.com and get hooked up with this CD!

Fate Thirteen - Demo CD
We've got 4 songs of Converge/Eighteen Visions style metal/scremocore here from this SoCal band. The music is heavy with lot's of tempo changes and excellent guitar work. The vocals go from mid-range screams to melodic singing here and there. I personally think they should drop the clean vocals and stick with the screams, but then they might fall to being a tad monotonous, so what the hell, keep 'em in there I guess. My favorite tracks on here would be here are "The Kiss", which has a really cool slow breakdown and "Looking Through The Eyes of A Rock N' Roll Washup" which is complete with blast beats. "Three Beautiful Faces In The Dark Midnight" and "The Candyman Ran Her Dead" complete this demo. Sound quality is really good for a demo and actually goes really well with the vibe of the band. For more info on Fate Thirteen e-mail them at xFatethirteenx@aol.com or check out their website at: http://www.listen.to/xFate13x

Animosity - Demo tape
First off I've got to state that the members of Animosity are young, pre-High School in fact, and with that mind take note of these guys because in a few years these guys will probably own hardcore. What we've got here from Animosity is 6 songs of new school hardcore in the vein of All Out War or Hatebreed. I saw these guys live a few weeks ago and damn they were good, and just as good as any other new band twice their ages just starting up. The quality of this demo is pretty shitty but it's still obvious these guys have got some talent. Leo's vocals sound much older then he actually is, the guitars are crunchy, and the drums are solid. And to top it all off they even through in a touch of Sabbath during the last song "Fear". Definitely be on the look out for these guys, they're coming up hard.

The Eleventh Hour - Demo tape
The Eleventh Hour are a four piece coming out of Moorpark, Cali. Right from the first song I'm surprised with this band. These guys are mixing up old school punk influenced hardcore with new school screamo vocals and create a very cool mix. There's five songs on here and my favorite would definitely be "Until We Die" which has good beat changes and is more original then most hardcore songs yet still retains a hardcore foundation. Quality wise this is an average demo, not great, but definitely listenable. Check out the Eleventh Hour website at http://11thhour.cjb.net for more info on these guys and their demo.

All Bets Off - "Friendly Fire" - Cynic Squand Records
All Bets Off finally get their eclectic blend of hardcore onto CD. This 8 song self released CD really delivers the goods. I think this CD is what they finally needed to take them up a few notches in the music scene. 7 original songs and a cover of "Like You" by Judge. One thing I've always loved about All Bets Off is the fact that they're very original and people from all walks of life can get into them. Hardcore kids, punks, emo kids, and even metal heads can all enjoy this CD. Great musicianship all around and with good hooks and catches in the songs. If you like your music a little different definitely look out for this CD.

Over My Dead Body - "This Feeling Will Never Fade"
With a name like "Over My Dead Body" I figured this would be one killer metalcore band and when I popped in this demo I was a bit dissapointed. However that feeling of dissapointment from not hearing some super heavy guitars quickly faded as I was bombarded by some refreshing old school hardcore. Over My Dead Body is a fairly new straight edge band from San Diego consisting of ex-members of Unbroken, Forced Life, and Built To Last. When I first got this I listened to it about 10 times in a row and after that I still wanted more. The 6 songs on here are near classics full of sing alongs and dance parts. Over My Dead Body is very good at what they do. Most of what they sing about revolves around straight edge and being true to yourself but they don't get self centered and do not have the overly militant "if you're not sXe you suck" deal, which is a big bonus. If I had to compare them to any one band it would probably be Judge, not only in sound but in intensity. These guys definitely have heart and you should definitely be into to them, straight edge or not.

Embrace The End - "s/t" - Demo tape
Damn! Talk about a kick ass demo! Placerville of all places delivers the fuckin goods via Embrace The End. This 3 song demo sounds great. Super heavy brutal hardcore like a cross of Hoods, Sworn Vengeance, and Hatebreed. They're not to original but they play awesome and do what they do really well. This demo is very solid and this is definitely a band to look out for. Go to their website: http://embracetheend.cjb.net/

Lowlife - "s/t" - Demo tape
After a few years of existense, the Bay Area's Lowlife reformed about a year ago with a new lineup and updated sound, and they've finally got a demo out with the new material. Lowlife has quickly become one of my favorite bands in the NorCal scene. Their live shows are some of the best around. This demo only has 3 studio tracks, but also has a live track from a November show back in 1999. Lowlife mixes up new school and old school hardcore along with a bit of oi/working class flavor. They're roots definitely come from New York, be it NYC punk rock or New York's hardest hardcore or metal. They've got tons of hard as fuck breakdowns which always get people going crazy in the pit, as well as fast circle pit beats for the old schoolers. The demo isn't of the best quality but it certainly delivers where it counts, which is in the song writing. Lowlife is the shit, period.

Gohan - "s/t" - Demo CD
"Tear down the standards of this crippled subculture" is what kicks off this demo CD of Gohan's. They play metal/hardcore on the emo side of things that occasionally gets melodic. I'm digging the music but I'm not to into the lyrics which are definitely emo. Music wise there's a good mix of tempo changes which is always gets the plus in my book. Gohan manages to stay fresh with their riffs and keep away from getting boring. The vocals are like a cross of Earth Crisis and Carcass, which at first I didn't like, but after a few listens, it's getting better. I'm not the biggest fan of this style of the music, but I know a good band when I hear one, and these guys are pretty good. I don't know if they're going to be the next big thing, but they should get a decent following. Check 'em out if you get a chance.

Two Forty - "Life Is A Twisted Painful Thing" - Demo CD
240 is a new band from the Bay Area who have released one awesome CD here. Totally pissed off sick as hell style hardcore. Cross Biohazard / Sepultura / Madball and you've got something close to 240. 5 songs on here with killer breakdowns, good musicianship, dynamics, the works; It's all here. Once these guys start playing shows they're going to rise fast in the scene. I was really impressed when I got this CD. "Sick World" is an awesome song, and the others ("Twenty First", "Reset Button", "Urban Warfare", and "Mama's Wrists") are also great. Straight up, get a hold of this demo and check out 240 as soon as you can, you won't be disappointed.

Execution Style - "s/t" - Demo CD
Execution Style hails from NorCal and finally got around to releasing a demo. After the long wait for this, they certainly delivered the goods. This CD is 5 songs of Hatebreed / Merauder style hardcore with some killer riffs and breakdowns. Much like Merauder, I'd like to hear more fast parts to mix it up a little better, but what Execution Style has done on this CD, they've done well. The sound quality is great for a demo and everything is mixed well, so I've no complaints in that department. Over all this is a great representation of the band even though it's not quite as intense as they are live, it still has a lot of power. The best song on here is definitely "Falling Down". It's got one of the coolest riffs I've heard from a hardcore band in a long time. The other songs on here are "Seize The Day", "Void of Pain", "Sling Blade (Bring It On)", and "Down For Life". Definitely be on the look out for Execution Style, they're coming up fast.

Second Coming - "In Denile Of Our Impermanance" - Breakout Records
Finally!! This album nearly didn't come out, but lucky for us, Breakout Records picked up the recording. Now I have to unfortunetly start this review on the down note. As soon I popped this CD in I was dissapointed with the sound quality, it's not what I would expect from Second Coming. It's extremely raw. Everything is mixed ok, but the quality it's self almost sounds like the CD was recorded from a vinyl master. It has that high trebble noise that vinyl records have. Anyways, fuck the bad, on to the good! Regardless of the sound quality, this is still Second Coming, and every song rocks big time. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, Second Coming is by far the most under rated band on the West Coast, if not the whole U.S. Awesome music, awesome lyrics, Second Coming has it all. True hardcore that doesn't fit into any one catagory. It's aggressive with plenty of fast parts, sing a-longs, breakdowns, and everything else a hardcore kid could want. Trust me, just go out and buy this CD, you will not be dissapointed!!

Sworn Vengeance - "Abbadon" - Westcoast Worldwide Records
I think out of all the metalcore bands on the Westcoast, Sworn Vengeance is by far the best. To say the least, this is one brutal record. The music is similar to that of All Out War, but with vocals more on the low end/growl side. Overall it's pretty original, the musicianship is good, and everything is played real tight, so overall I think this is a real solid release. Live, Sworn Vengeance is awesome, and now draws a good size crowd into the pit, with everyone going nuts during their skull crusher breakdowns and occasional cirlce pit blast. Lyrically, saying these lyrics were "pissed off in nature" would be an understatement. Brutal rage is the subject in pretty much all of their songs. With songs like "Merciless", "Crack The Bone", "Unresolved Issues of Rage", "Hammer", and "Burial Ground", you'd think these guys would all be in jail, but luckily they're not, so they're still playing kick ass music. My only complaint about this album is the mix. I would like to hear the guitars a little louder. If Sworn Vengeance came across a really good record contract, and got a lot of money to record with, they could literally make a ground breaking album. I can't wait for their next cd. But until then, "Abbadon" will do fine.

Powerhouse - "No Regrets" - Blackout Records
What can I say? Powerhouse is the band that got me into this mad world of hardcore 5 years ago, and they will forever be one of my favorite hardcore bands. These guys are 100% hardcore. From Oakland, their style of hardcore has it's roots planted deeply in the original New York style, but they have a sound all their own. From their first demo, up to this full length album, they've kept it real, raw, and agressive. Their's no comprimise, and no regrets with this band. They play fast and loud, and never let you down. "No Regrets" has 14 songs that keep you moving and singing along non-stop. My favorite songs are "Ignorant One", "Hypocrite", "No Regrets", "Powertrip", "Nothing Sacred", "Should've Known", and "Numb". I love all the songs, but those are my favorites. All of those are definite hardcore classics in my book. The sound quality of this cd is perfect, with great production. If I had to compare them to any one bands, it would be Sick Of It All, but that wouldn't be accurate, because Powerhouse has their own style... OBHC muthafucka! Powerhouse really is a unique band, with a unique sound that I think everyone should check out, so go on and do it, now!

No Innocent Victim - "Flesh and Blood" - Victory Records
No Innocent Victim come pounding out of San Diego, California. I've seen these guys live quite a few times and they put on a great show, but despite this I've never really gotten into them because they play "Hardcore for Christ", as they put it. Being a die hard Agnostic, I don't like their overly pro-Christ lyrics. All of their lyrics involve God or Jesus in some way. Music wise I like them a lot even though they're not that original. If you took Agnostic Front, Sick Of It All, 25 Ta Life, and Earth Crisis and threw them in a pot, you'd get the music of N.I.V. The vocals are like a cross between Lou of Sick Of It All and Karl of Earth Crisis, and for the most part are indeciferable which makes the music more listenable for those of us who do not follow Christ. I really think it's a shame that their lyrics are so into Jesus Christ because they really exlude a lot of people from themselves who might normally get really into them other wise. If you're Christian, and you like hardcore or any music that is pro-Christ, then buy this cd for sure, other wise you might want to check it out before buying it if you don't like the lyrical content.

Hoods - "Alone" - Breakout Records
I honestly would have to say that this cd is one of the top 10 hardcore cds of the decade, and probably even in the top 5. Although it only contains 6 songs which last a mere 10 minutes, it's one of the most intense 10 minutes ever to be recorded. When listening to this cd, straight from the opening song "Once Again '98", which boasts a revival in the scene and of the self, to the closing of "Endless Pain", which live gets about every person into the pit to kill everyone else, you are not let down for one second. All the songs are played super tight, and for the most part are fast with skull crushing breakdowns thrown in at just the right moments. This is a must have cd for every fan of hardcore. There's not one bad thing about this cd except for the fact that it's only 10 minutes long, but that doesn't even matter because those 10 minutes are so good and intense. The lyrics in "Once Again '98" are some of my favorite lyrics from any hardcore album ever, and the lyrics in the other songs are really good as well. The songs on the Alone EP include "Cycle", "Vain", "Alone", "This Time", "Once Again '98", and "Endless Pain". All the songs are new except "Once Again '98" which is a remake of the song from their Back Ta Basics 7inch which is now out of print. Straight up, if you don't have this cd, you need to buy it right now.
